The Great Migration is a remarkable ‘show’ of diverse species.

So what is the Great Migration

The Great Migration is a breathtaking natural phenomenon characterized by the movement of millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other ungulates across the expansive plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya. While some herds form into mega-groups of multi-thousands, more commonly, smaller herds are dispersed throughout various regions. For these herds, the primary concerns are always two things: fresh grazing land and access to water.

This migration also sets the stage for a dramatic and perilous spectacle, where the movement of food attracts predators like lions, cheetahs, crocodiles, and hyenas. It's a remarkable ‘show’ of diverse species, with over 250,000 wildebeests and 30,000 zebras succumbing to the challenges of this arduous journey, particularly the younger ones who struggle to keep pace with their mothers. While the harsh realities of nature may seem cruel, witnessing this cycle of life offers a profound insight into the delicate balance that governs all living beings, reminding us of our interconnectedness with the natural world.

The Great Migration draws predators and acclaimed photographers worldwide to capture its breathtaking moments.

Best Time to Experience the Migration

From December to April, the southern Serengeti becomes the favoured grazing ground for wildebeests. The short, grassy plains here offer little cover for predators, making it an ideal habitat for these animals. Witness the birth of over 500,000 wildebeest and zebra calves born each spring, with February and March being optimal months for newborn sightings. As the rainy season draws to a close, typically in April or May, the landscape transforms. The south and east plains of the Serengeti begin to dry out, marking the start of the migration. Herds commence their journey north and westward, although not all individuals follow the same route. Some veer towards the Western Corridor and the Grumeti River, while others opt for paths through the Loliondo area or via Seronera and Lobo.

From July to November, the Great Migration reaches its climax. During this period, an awe-inspiring spectacle unfolds as wildebeests undertake a mass exodus into Kenya's Maasai Mara. Here, the Mara River crossings take centre stage, attracting visitors from around the globe. These crossings, particularly in July and August, are moments of intense drama, with wildebeests braving crocodile-infested waters in a bid to reach the other side. If you're seeking the exhilaration of witnessing this chaotic yet mesmerizing event, planning your trip for July or August is paramount!

As the seasons transition into fall, the migration begins its southward journey back into Tanzania. Wildlife enthusiasts can still enjoy abundant sightings in renowned safari destinations such as Kenya's southern Maasai Mara and northern Tanzania. The migration persists until October and November, contingent upon rainfall patterns, as the herds gradually make their way back, completing yet another chapter in this remarkable natural phenomenon.
