Founder’s Story

Molweni friends!

The idea for Thandeka started back in 2008 while I was working in South Africa with Grassroot Soccer, an organization that uses the power of sport to engage with and educate adolescents about HIV. I fell in love with the people, the country, and the way I felt doing this work. While the challenges youths faced were overwhelmingly raw and real, they were met with an even more formidable display of perseverance, dignity and grace.

With time I had the realization that it is those closest to problems that best understand the solutions. Whether it be access to water, education, healthcare or employment, it is the people living amongst daily hardships that hold the intimate knowledge required to solve them. I knew others would want to hear these voices.

We founded Thandeka as we knew that travel was the key to building these cross-cultural relationships. Through our highly curated safaris, we pair world-class wildlife experiences with access to leaders solving issues you care about. Through our elegantly crafted journeys, we guide travelers through life-changing experiences and have a whole lot of fun along the way!

A miracle is more than an event: it is an invitation. It says, ‘The universe is bigger than you thought it was.’
